I’ve been at McKinsey for a while, and a lot of us have had multiple careers. Michael Chui: I started at McKinsey after grad school, after getting a PhD. Can you tell our listeners a bit more about your background, your role at McKinsey, and what made you get involved in this research? Kweilin Ellingrud: Michael, I’ll start with you. Michael and Jackie, welcome and thank you for joining me in discussing this very important report. We’ll share some of the key learnings from our recent report, as well as the insights that came from our research, with the hopes that it will spur conversations in your organizations and spark an interest to learn and do more. Our discussion this week will focus on giving you, our listeners, an inside look at our latest research on Asian American workers. This episode is going to be a bit different from our other episodes. Before we start, I want to give our listeners a little bit of background on this episode. Michael is a McKinsey Global Institute partner and a partner at McKinsey. My coauthors, and our guests for today, will also be joining us: Michael Chui and Jackie Wong. I coauthored the report that we’ll be discussing today: Asian American workers: Diverse outcomes and hidden challenges. I’m a McKinsey Global Institute director and a senior partner based in Minneapolis. I’m Kweilin Ellingrud, your host for today. Join us in conversation with leaders who are accelerating progress to grow, broaden, and sustain prosperity for more Americans. Kweilin Ellingrud: Welcome to McKinsey’s Future of America podcast, where we explore how we can build a future that drives sustainable and inclusive growth. The following transcript has been edited for clarity. They debunk some of the well-known myths about Asian Americans, explore the challenges they face, and identify opportunities for companies to create more inclusive work environments for this demographic. The authors share a behind-the-scenes look at the report and key findings that surprised them. In this episode of the Future of America podcast, host Kweilin Ellingrud, a McKinsey senior partner and coauthor of the new report, joins fellow coauthors Michael Chui and Jackie Wong to discuss their latest research, which focuses on the challenges that Asian Americans face in the workplace. Although often stereotyped as so-called model minorities who achieve above-average levels of socioeconomic success, Asian Americans have varied economic and employment outcomes and require specific support from their companies, according to a new McKinsey report, Asian American workers: Diverse outcomes and hidden challenges. Asian Americans represent the fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States, one that is projected to almost double in the next 40 years.

Foxit offers PhantomPDF it has many of the same features as Adobe Reader (and many extra) but isn’t free. There are plenty of alternatives to Adobe Reader, although not as many as you’ll find for Windows and none of which are quite as complete. There are also versions available for Windows, and mobile versions for iPhone and Android that offer pared-down elements of the app. Where can you run this program?Īdobe Reader runs on Mac computers. There are dozens of options pertaining to the various ways in which you might want to view, use, or export your PDFs and, since Adobe Reader has been around for a long time, there’s ample support online, both user-generated and official. The app’s settings are surprisingly complex. The interface is attractive and easy to find your way around, and carrying out any of the tasks offered by the app is simple and intuitive. Using Adobe Reader is a pleasant experience. Most of the main editing functions are represented by little icons in the top bar and the main app features (sharing, commenting, etc) are in the side. If you’ve used other Adobe products, you’ll find this familiar and easy to get to grips with. When you open a PDF in Adobe Reader, most of the functions you’ll need will be in the top or sidebars. There are also a number of add-on features, so you can expand the functionality of Reader without moving all the way up to Pro. The Adobe Reader interface will also offer you the ability to edit and create PDFs, but when you click on the button, you’ll be brought to the Adobe website where you can purchase Acrobat Pro, the granddaddy of PDF apps. It also offers a few additional features, like the ability to share your PDF with a variety of 3rd party apps, to hook up with storage services like Dropbox and Google Drive (making it easier to manage large numbers of PDFs), and to stamp, annotate, and comment on PDFs you’ve imported. Remember, Adobe Reader for Mac will only allow you to read, annotate, and print PDFs. Even so, its age doesn’t seem to have done it any harm, as it looks and acts like an app that’s spent much less time hanging around on people’s computers. In fact, at 26, it’s probably older than many of you reading. Adobe’s entry-level PDF reader and viewerĪdobe Reader is a classic Adobe app that has been around for some time. I used only two screws per board, in an alternating pattern, just to secure them to the outer joists. That done, I began securing the deck boards to the joists, using a 1/4″ scant to ensure proper spacing. Then, I used the template, along with a punch, to mark the screw locations on each of the deck boards: Then, I used the Ryobi 18V 1/2″ Cordless Drill to secure the first footing to one of the joists. Next, I cut all the components on my backyard deck, which makes for a great outdoor work area on good days. ******* NiCad powered 18V 1/2″ Cordless Drill The NiCad batteries took a bit more time, but were certainly fully charged in under an hour. While I didn’t specifically time the charging process, I noticed that the Lithium Ion batteries were fully charged after only about twenty minutes. So you need to charge them up before actually using them for the first time. The batteries ship with a very low charge for safety reasons. The first step, of course, was to fully charge both pairs of batteries. I’d also measure how well each drill/battery performed, quite literally in terms of the total number of deck screws driven. When finished, I’d subjectively compare the drills on ease of use and overall performance. The second using the Ryobi 18V Lithium Ion ONE+ Compact Cordless Drill. The first using the Ryobi 18V 1/2″ Cordless Drill powered with a NiCad battery. More Information: Learn more about decking & other types of screws in our Guide to Screws. The fasteners consist of #9-3″ square drive, composite deck screws. There are three fasteners per board/joist connection, as well as three per joist/footing connection. The deck itself is 19″ wide, and consists of 5/4×6 deck boards, spaced 1/4″ apart. Its substructure consists of three 2×4 joists, 8″ on-center, and resting on four 2×6 footings. I deliberately designed the assembly to include far more screws than necessary, so as to put the drills through their paces by driving a whole lot of screws.īelow is a 3D rendering of one of the test assemblies (if you like messing about with Google SketchUp):Įach test assembly is 8′ in length. My real project of choice would’ve involved laying the surface of a deck down, but since I had no actual deck construction project underway, I simulated one by building several assemblies consisting of decking boards on top of 2×4 joists. I was asked to review both Ryobi cordless drills with the above points in mind, while also using them in a real project. ******* Sample Project: Installing Decking BUT the Lithium Ion “dual chemistry” charger will accept either type of battery.) Furthermore, nearly all ONE+ components can be purchased separately, which is great if you have an existing investment in either battery technology, because you can readily purchase a tool from either line without having to worry about buying additional batteries and chargers. (The only non-interchangeable situation I’ve encountered is that the NiCad charger will not accept a Lithium Ion battery. While these Ryobi drill kits are supplied with two different battery technologies, all Ryobi ONE+ branded 18V batteries and tools are readily interchangeable. And the Compact Drill is indeed noticeably more “compact”, with an obvious shorter overall length. (without battery) while the 18V Lithium-Ion ONE+ Compact Cordless Drill is a tad lighter, at 2.7 lbs. The NiCad powered 18V 1/2″ Cordless Drill weighs about 3.1 lbs. Both feature a 1/2″ keyless, single-sleeve chuck, 2-speed gear box (440 maximum RPM/1600 maximum RPM), and a 24-position clutch. The Ryobi 18V Lithium Ion ONE+ Compact Cordless Drill Kit. Building Moxie, on behalf of The Home Depot, recently asked me to review two Ryobi 18V cordless drills: Ryobi’s Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) powered 1/2″ 18V Cordless Drill (P204 drill/P850 kit) (Amazon Affiliate Page), and their newer, 18-Volt ONE+ LITHIUM Compact Cordless Drill (P208B drill/P818 kit) (Refurbished on Amazon from around $100). adidas 4D-cushioning indulges in an off-white tone that’s sure to satisfy enthusiasts of the “worn/vintage” aesthetic that’s taken over pockets of Instagram. In the ads, a Phoenix student is seen driving past parking spots in a university parking lot that are marked with the logos of these companies. The ads ran from 2012 to 2014, and were part of the University’s “Let’s Get to Work” marketing campaign.
