![]() You are cruising at 2200 rpm - no load and throttle plates are pretty tight and manifold vacuum is high. Now picture this - changed to vac advance So at 2200 you floor it to pass your timing advance climbs as Rpms increase untimely until you reach the max mechanical advance. Your timing hasn't even reached its full advance and won't or shouldn't until nearing 3000 Rpms. You are cursing at 2200 Rpms- no real load on engine. In a street application you want to take advantage of the benefit of running high advance number at cruise situations. In a racing situation, you don't want the engine vacuum playing around with your timing. Now if you do change then your timing ritual will involve disconnecting the advance pot- that's the only difference. If you aren't driving this thing at WOT most of the time I'd swap out to a vacuum advance. That's what your mechanical advance only is for. Some adjustment may be required if detonation is a problem or if detonation threshold is higher. Every engine is different but that's a great place to start and most likely will work really well. This is because under a high rpm high load situation any more than 36 total and you are likely to break something expensive. You are setting the timing for WOT and high load fail safe setting. You still want to verify your timing marks. Sorry about the long post, but timing is a very misunderstoodĬlick to expand. No that doesn't change anything. My timing is: 18 initial + 16 mech + 12 vac =46. Initial plus mechanical plus vac adv should equal 46-50 degrees at 3000 rpm. BUT, most distributors have too much vacuum adv built in (20 to 24 degrees stock), so vac adv usually needs to be limited to 10 to 14 degrees. Your engine will run cooler at low speeds and you will get better mileage with vacuum adv. Most stock distributors have about 20 degrees of mechanical advance. Initial plus mechanical always equals 34-36. If your engine doesn't idle well at this setting, you may need to limit the amount of mechanical advance. Initial advance plus mechanical advance =34-36 degrees. Now rev engine untill all mech adv is in. This should get you close, but keep working at it until all mech adv is in by 3000 rpm. Get an advance curve kit (cheap) and install one light spring and one medium spring. If you are getting advance after 3000 rpm you need to use lighter springs. Watch the timing to see at what rpm the mechanical advance is all in. Now unhook and plug the vacuum line and plug it (no vacuum leaks). ![]() Now you are able to set your timing right. With this tape you don't need a fancy dial back timing light. Now you know that your timing marks are good and you have the degrees marked up to 50 or 60 depending on the tape you have. TDC is halfway between these two marks, Then install a timing tape (available at most any parts store) so that 0 on the tape corresponds with the halfway mark you just made. Install a piston stop in the spark plug hole. Then Rotate engine until the piston hits the stop. Loosen the two #1 valve rockers so the stop doesn,t hit the valves. Rotate engine until the#1 piston is at the bottom or close.
